Frans Esterhuyse was born in Johannesburg September 24 th 1941. He attended the Heronmereweg and Turffontein primary schools.

After his high school days at Hoërskool Die Fakkel, he studied at the Witwatersrand Technical College where he completed a very thorough three year diploma course in Commercial Art. Well known artists George Boys, Anna Vorster, Phil Botha and W.H. Coetzer were some of his art tutors.
